Your first driving lesson: A little preparation goes a long way

You don’t need to arrive knowing everything. A few simple preparations can make the first conversation with your instructor easier.

Before a first lesson, it’s normal to have practical questions: Where do I meet the instructor? What should I bring? What if I’m nervous? Start with the details you can confirm ahead of time.

1. Confirm the plan

Check your lesson date, arrival time, meeting point, and expected finish time. Ask whether the driving appointment is separate from your classroom schedule. Confirm who to contact if you’re delayed or need to discuss a change.

2. Ask what to bring

Check which permit, license, enrollment documents, or other items the school needs for your lesson. Requirements depend on your stage and the type of appointment, so get the list directly from your instructor or the office.

3. Share where you’re starting

Tell your instructor how much experience you have and what feels unfamiliar. If you’re worried about a particular skill or need an explanation repeated, say so. That conversation helps the instructor understand what you need.

A useful way to begin:
“This is new to me. Could you explain what we’ll work on today and how you’ll guide me?”

4. Leave room for questions

Ask what the lesson will cover before you begin. You can also ask how driving appointments are scheduled, how progress is reviewed, and how a parent or guardian can stay involved.

5. Finish with a clear next step

At the end, ask what went well and what to focus on next. If you’re continuing supervised practice, discuss the appropriate next steps with your instructor and parent or guardian.

A first lesson is the beginning of a learning process. Arrive prepared to listen, ask questions, and build your skills one step at a time.
